Eating Disorders

Eating disorders impact the health and well being of a considerable number of women and an increasing number of men in the United States today. Although low body weight can be an indicator of an eating disorder, a individual DOES NOT need to appear underweight to suffer signs and symptoms of an eating disorder. In fact, many men and women with eating disorders do not appear underweight. This does not mean they suffer less or are in any less danger.

The relationship between distinct eating disorders is often blurry as there is considerable overlap and change in symptoms over time. However, diagnostically we separate eating disorders into four categories according to differential eating behaviors.

  1. Anorexia Nervosa
  2. Bulimia Nervosa
  3. Binge Eating Disorder
  4. Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified

Individuals suffering with eating disorders have common struggles with dieting, distorted body image, fear of fat, and low self-esteem. Click here for more specific symptom information.

Effective treatment for eating disorders includes a blend of therapeutic interventions. Treatment is tailored to the needs of the individual and often includes cognitive, interpersonal, experiential and nutritional components.

At La Luna Center we believe that eating disorders are multifaceted and require supportive, compassionate, and comprehensive care. We offer individual and group therapy as well as intensive outpatient treatment to meet the unique needs of each individual.
